Some new projects on the side

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

Okay, so I got my domain the other day, and I made a quick site using Drupal… Then that kinda died down, got bored…. :-P Now, my school Grant High School…. well they have a new website, www.granths.com, and it SUCKS. They even hired a ‘professional’ company to do it for them, and it still sucks (they’re using Movable Type as it’s platform) I don’t have a class with the Vice Principal, who is in charge of it, so it’s not like I can give some ideas…

The school also has it’s own seperate newspaper, the Grantonian. They have their own website, www.grantonian.com, which they update themselves using Dreamweaver. Well, I thought I could do a better job, so I started my own grantonian beta website, which is here, which uses WordPress as it’s platform. It’s probably done now, maybe some minor theme edits, but it’s done.

I sent a message to my Journalistic Writing class teacher, Mr. Leeman, who also is in charge of the Grantonian. He liked it, and invited me to a newspaper meeting sometime soon where he’ll bring up the idea to the other editors. So that’s kinda cool, it might actually get used!

Then I started fiddling around with my own version of the Grant High School website, the one that the VP is in charge of… And I used Drupal for that. After a bit of fiddling around, I have all the features that the current site has, even some more… But I didn’t even touch the template, or bother to re-create the structure. I decided it was just too complicated and time taking, and I wasn’t going to do it unless they actually want to use it.

Some interesting articles, black holes, the 28 hour day, wi-fi, bittorrent, global wi-fi

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Well, there you have it, black holes not only destroy everything, but they help create the most essential part of life: stars. Who would have thought? I always thought of black holes as these big… vacuums that suck in everything and only emit radiation… But that radiation they emit, it also helps create stars!ABC News: Scientists: Black Hole Helps Spawn Stars

The 28 Hour Day… lets let that sink in…. naw lets not, okay, that’s a stupid idea. 28 hour day? Yeah right. Maybe on another planet, but on earth, 24 hours a day fits nearly perfectly. If you’re lazy and want it…. well i say too bad.

YES I like this even better then the “Rural only wi-fi for rednecks”. This one covers like…. a high percentage of the global landmass! Now that’s kick ass!

Well guys, I have my site running from home now! Cool eh? Please don’t DoS me!
Check it out though, I’m hoping of making it something fun… My blog and photoblog and flickr will still be here, and I’m gonna use them mainly, they’re more reliable! :-P Lets see… so yeah, check it out, and tell me what you think… I kinda tried Drupal without the intention of using it for my actual site… but there it is… lol (BTW: I’ve tried a LOT of other content management systems, PHP-Nuke, XOOPS, Drupal, Xanga, etc. but I’m still up for suggestions on new ones to try out)

Remember the Flock?

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Okay, well I got home from school today, and Flock (that new web browser, www.flock.com) sent me an invite to get their developer preview of the software.
I’ve been wanting to try it out, so I dled it… The interface is great, excellent idea’s… but it’s slow, the ‘post to blog’ function isn’t good (integration with blogger sucks, i can’t even post, all of my settings are set right too!)

The view itself looks like it came from mozilla (the way it displays web pages)… and I dunno, it’s just a little slow in general.

This is the developer pre-release though, so I’m not worried about it much. Just hope they get it all fixed so I can use their final fast version!

LaCie HDD’s…. suck

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

Okay, I’ve had two different models of the LaCie brand HDD’s… and well, they have the best outside looks, but on the inside, they break easily.
My first model, was a 250 GB Porche Deisgned HDD from LaCie… that started malfunctioning after about 2 months, and I got it replaced and now it’s in Japan barely being used. After that, I decided to buy a 500 GB HDD from LaCie, and that worked better, lasted 5 months before malfunctioning, but now I can barely use it, and all my data on it is corrupt. I’m trying to find my reciept for it so I can get it fixed before the 1 year waranty is up…. but that seems unlikely.
This sucks.

Some video clips on Vimeo

Friday, October 14th, 2005

Here’s some clips from the Flickr for video’s website: Viemo. I you encode in h264, and in 320 x 191 or something resolution with medium quality, this is what you get (which is pretty good, even looking at it full screen on a 1024 x …. w/e dimension LCD)

If you want the video’s taken down, email me at ender.at.eros@gmail.com with your contact info and a reason (I don’t want to see me on that, or, you don’t have a right to have that on the web), and I’ll take it down. I do not want to offend anyone. (well, unless it’s Sean… lol)

The fate of the internet

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

Okay, yesterday Apple announced it’s new 5th Generation iPod, which supports video. That’s cool, but it’s also something that’s been expected.

Something I feel is more important, is the future of the 1st generation Internet. I say this, because technology evolves, there will probably be a new networking solution coming in the unkown future, but for now, we have the 1st Gen Internet.

I have mixed feelings, at first, I thought there was just two sides to the … political dispute. Now I realize there are 4 sides. (I’m going to get real general with the basic 4, here’s the source which has more detailed information)

  • Argentina (support from African states, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada, Chile, Mexico, and Ecuador)
This plans calls for the ‘evolution’ of the current structure, while ‘internationalizing’ ICANN
  • The EU (led by the UK)
This plan gives ICANN independance, and creates a new board, which overseas it, and a new forum (which would allow anything related to managing the internet be discussed, open to governments, and organizations.)
  • Iran, Pakistan (supported by Brazil, China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia)
This plan wants to make the internet be controlled by the UN, but with a private sector overseeing it. It will also have a forum to discuss anything related to managing the internet, open to governments.
  • Last but not least, the US
The US doesn’t really want to change how it is right now. Meaning complete control over the internet. It will “listen” to other countries to see what their needs are, and have a dialogue related to the internet governance.

For now, I think that I am going with Argentina. The internet needs to evolve, and I think that’s the best way. It will keep it’s current structure, but have more internationalism, which means the US wont have complete control.

Maybe when the 2nd generation internet comes out, the plan the EU has would be good. To speak metaphorically, you can keep your house the way it is, you can make some key upgrades to make it better, you can take it down and build a new one, or you can let other people in. (I’m not sure if that metaphore actually works… :-P)
