My two other “Rules to Live By” posts were about rules by Bob Parsons and Steve Jobs. Bob Parsons is the sole investor of the Go Daddy Group, and Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple Computers, Inc.
For me, the most memorable rules were (I added my own comment below each rule… it’s because of those comments that I think the rule was most memorable)
- Solve your own problems
I’ve noticed this myself, but whenever I solve my own problems by myself, the results turn out to be better - Always be moving forward
I’ve had some hard times in the past, and I know that sitting around doing nothing about it is always worse than lightening up and moving on - Focus on what you want to have happen
I really wanted to see what it was like being a Japanese high school student. Well, where am I living now?
- Get and stay out of your comfort zone
Life is all about taking risks. If you don’t, you’re playing it safe, and that doesn’t always give the best results - When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think.
Cross country is probably one of the good examples for this. Towards the end of the race is when you feel like quitting the most, but you have to trust that you’re body will hold out until the end of the race. Because it almost always does. - Never give up
Trying again isn’t giving up, it’s when you quit what you’re doing that is giving up. - You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.
I don’t know how my life will be in 5, 10, 20 years, but I do trust that I’ll somehow make it through the hard times to come. - You’ve gotta find what you love
I’ve found someone who I love, but I haven’t found something that I love doing yet. - You’re time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life
I hate doing what people tell me to do, sometimes it’s necessary, but most of the time it’s not. So I do what I want, most of the time.
- Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
Self explanatory, really.
For me, those rules don’t quite cover everything, so I’ve included some of my own.
- Go for it
Similar to Nike’s “Just do it”… well, it’s pretty much the same. Basically, you won’t loose anything if you don’t go for it, but if you do, you have the opportunity to gain everything - Patience will get you many things, but will also loose you many things
Having patience in life will get you may places, but don’t be too patient and wait for things to happen. Sometimes you need to step up to the plate and do things that others might not be able to or want to. - Live everyday like it’s the last day of your life
We’re only living for a certain amount of time. We could die at any moment, car crash, earthquake, tsunami… That’s why it’s important to tell the people you love that you love them, and you live everyday of your life like it’s your last. (ie. enjoy every day)
It’s rare to see original rules, and I’m 99.99% sure that my rules have been said by someone before me. That doesn’t mean that I said them though.
I'm not finished with the design of my blog quite yet, please hold on while I fix the comments, archives, and search templates.
