War on Terror: The Board Game

Monday, February 12th, 2007

War on Terror: The Board GameRISK is a fun game, I love it. So do my friends, and my friends friends. But sometimes I’d like something with a bit more strategy. I’ve played StarCraft online for at least a couple hundred hours, and it’s great. But it can get tiring. Board games are great for after a long computer game/video game.

War on Terror: The Board Game looks like it’ll be able to do just that. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of it. :D

If a desktop like this is implemented in future OS’, think of how we would use the internet.

Blogger at top of everything “blog” searched

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

Everyone uses Google search. I bet even Yahoo people use Google search. Which is why I think it’s important that Google keeps its search engine fair. Lately, they’ve been ‘advertising’ Blogger as “hints” on any search that has the word “blog” in it.

Blogger AdI read before how Google puts ads for its own products in the top 5 placements for searches and website ads, but I didn’t believe it. I also didn’t want to believe it. But what Google is doing now, it’s so in your face there’s nothing you can do except believe it.

Think of how much companies would pay to have their product come as a “hint” for every search related to a particular term. Just because Google owns the search engine, I don’t think it should be able to bend it’s own rules and put itself at the top… unless of course it’s already in the Terms of Use, in that case I guess I’ve been using Google all this time knowing that would happen, eh? ;)

kuler

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Finding colors that match can sometimes be hard, you’ve had those times too right?

For your computer, there is Color Schemer Studio (which has some pretty neat features). But what if you’re on the go, and you’re not at your computer? What do you do then?

kulerWell, Adobe Labs has a lot of cool stuff, and one of them, is kuler.

It’s all built on Flash, so any computer that is Flash 9 capable can use it. You can create schemes from a set of rules. Analogous, monochromatic, triad, complementary, compound, shades, and even your own custom one. (though, I don’t know what half of those things mean, they sure do bring some good sets together).

One of the cool features is you can see what everyone else is making too, the most popular ones, the  newest ones, and even the highest rated ones!

MacHeist Bundle, macZOT, and Charity

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

MacHeist released their ‘prize bundle’ (I guess that’s what you call it, I haven’t been keeping up with their stuff, just don’t have the time to play the games either).

8 great Mac applications for only $49! Plus, 25% of it goes to the charity of your choice! The deal doesn’t get sweeter than that.

Here’s a list of the apps:

  • Delicious Library
  • FotoMagico
  • ShapeShifter
  • DEVONthink Personal
  • Disco
  • RapidWeaver
  • iClip 4
  • One Pangea Game (Pangea Arcade or Enigmo 2 or Nanasour 2: Hatchling or Bugdom 2)

And it gets better than that. If they raise $50,000 for charity, they’ll also give out Newsfire, and if they raise $100,000 for charity, they’ll also put in TextMate!

Most of these applications have won some sort of award (or been hella popular), and textmate is like everyone’s friend!

Oh yeah, macZOT is also offering the same bundle. I guess the two sites are working together on this!

PS. I’ve just noticed this today, but there are a lot of websites out there that are pushing independent Mac software developers (as in supporting them), another new one is called MacAppADay (they give 5000 free copies of a Mac App everyday at midnight)

OriginalSignal

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

You know Google’s Personalized Homepage. We’ve all used it, customized it, etc. I mainly use it for getting an overview of all the latest news on one page. Then they added a tabbing feature so you could separate what you were looking at.

OrignalSignal 2They’ve done a great job at letting you customize it, but one thing I don’t like about it is you need to login to view your customized settings.

OriginalSignal has already done all the hard work for you. They’ve added feeds from many different news sources, and even took the time to split them up into different categories.

Cute menubarThey have a nice integrated search to look through everything, and even have a cute little menu bar that lets you subscribe, change the look of the page, view it on a mobile phone, amongst other things too. I enjoy going to it, and now use OriginalSignal instead of my GPH! (well, OS doesn’t let you add your own feeds, so for that, I use GPH)

Swivel! Look at data in a new (?) way!

Friday, December 8th, 2006

There’s TONS of data lying around the web. I mean, seriously, we wouldn’t know how to make use of it (well, maybe the genius’ at Google do). But the new Swivel site has an easy way to put together different data and make graphs out of them.

The site has ways for you to compare data, upload new data, and share the data you’ve come up with.

Swivel lets you explore data and share your insights with others. Swivel has data about politics, economics, weather, sports, business and more.

It’s still a Preview, (which, I’m assuming is like a Release Candidate?), so there isn’t as much data as you would hope, but the more users who upload and share, the more variety you get to compare data from.

Video for your mobile

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Verizon has it’s new subscription based YouTube service, but it’s not ‘really’ YouTube. Well, not the YouTube we used to know. And many of us don’t even use Verizon, so what’s another video alternative for your mobile?

Well, there is TinyTube. The site is made for your mobile (no graphics, etc. except for the vid), and it’s all user contributed. There are videos from Google Video, and other online video sources too. And until recently, there were also video’s from YouTube that were on there.

It’s not a competing service, but it’s a place where mobile users can go to view videos on their phone. Videos from many different sources.  One of the first videos I saw that I liked was Shake That. It looks like it’s sort of cut out from a movie… maybe not. :P

Roughly Drafted

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

I’ve read a lot of Mac sites before, ranging from blogs, news sites, to just plain websites… but Roughly Drafted sure has some fascinating articles. One of his series’ main topic is comparing Vista to Leopard.

It’s not the traditional comparison that you would think someone would write. He writes it more in detail, from pre-marketing all the way to … well, the tech specs. ;)
I can’t write much, though I’d love to. I just found out I have an essay due tomorrow, and I just finished helping three other friends on a different essay…. so I must get to work on my own now!

The Dark Side

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

So, I’m looking at some places to get WinXP Pro. Asked some friends if they had an unused copy around that I could have. (I want it legit).

Windows? of all things you want that?

As much as I love Mac, games like StarCraft just perform better on Windows. And I love StarCraft. With Apple’s BootCamp feature, I get to have the benefit of both OS’ on my MacBook.

Hopefully I wont catch a nasty flu while I use WinXP. If I do, my poor Mac will cry. :P

Being Five

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Being Five - Thanksgiving BagsRandom shapes really does let you find interesting blogs. I don’t quite remember how I found this one, but I know it was while I was looking through RS blogs. Anyways, Being Five has some entertaining comic strips about a five year old character.

App Crazy!

Monday, November 20th, 2006

The Delicious Generation, i love that term. This new Random Shapes member blog has some really good content. App Crazy! is run by Judson, and he’s got a good feel for what he blogs about. (Psst. I wish I had content as interesting as his. lol)

On another note, this new RS member, Joy, writes about some stuff regarding the question “does a successful career mean unsuccessful romance?”. Check it out!

Lonelygirl15 - Real Internet TV

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

I was catching up on my Wired News reading, and came across an interesting article. Started watching some of the shows (each one is only 1-3 min long) and they do build up a nice story line.

When you think about it, there hasn’t really been a show that was created for internet viewers. I mean, sure, networks do sell their content on iTunes, and it’s available over the net, but they weren’t really created to appeal to an internet user.

This video blog is. And I’m sure you’d enjoy watching it too. It has it’s own website, and the authors Youtube page has all of the videos too.

Hi-Def

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Watched my first feature-length hi-def movie today. I’ve seen trailers in hi-def, and they looked great. But being able to see a whole movie in hi-def is even better!

Into the Blue was the movie I watched. The underwater scenes looked so good. It’s like you were there taking pictures!

So, I’ve seen hi-def content, have a hi-def TV, and I love it. I highly suggest you get one too!

Now we’ve just got to wait until the distribution of hi-def content becomes mainstream. Because right now, it’s either too expensive to watch, or there isn’t a place nearby where you can get your hands on it.
