Rules to Live By (Part 3)

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

My two other “Rules to Live By” posts were about rules by Bob Parsons and Steve Jobs. Bob Parsons is the sole investor of the Go Daddy Group, and Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple Computers, Inc.

For me, the most memorable rules were (I added my own comment below each rule… it’s because of those comments that I think the rule was most memorable)

Rules to Live By (Part 2)

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

This post is a continueation of my previous post, Rules to Live by (Part 1). In Part 1, I talked about Bob Parsons Rules to Live by, and in this one I’ll be talking about Steve Jobs’ speech at the 2005 Commencement at Stanford.

Rules to Live By (Part 1)

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Bob Parsons, the sole investor of the Go Daddy Group, had posted an article about the 16 rules he lives by. I didn’t find out about it until today, but the rules sure are good ones.

Now, I do think his rules are good, but I’d also like to add some from Steve Jobs’ speech at Stanford’s 2005 Commencement ceremony.

Vanilla + WordPress

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Lussumo, the creator of the sleek forum software, Vanilla, recently released a way to integrate it with your WordPress setup.

I haven’t really talked about Vanilla much in the past, so I’ll do a little explaining for you here.

Vanilla is a very fast, light, and extensible forum software. It has virtually all the languages you need, making it multi-lingual friendly, an easy way to create your own add-ons, themes, and styles.

GoDaddy and a bit of history

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

I’ve been a GoDaddy customer ever since I bought my first domain name, enderstudios.com.

Back then I really was just ’starting’ in the business. I really didn’t have that much skill, and I did everything manually. No programs or content management systems. I also didn’t provide hosting or domain name services.

Later on I signed up with iPowerWeb and became a reseller for them. I’ve recommended their product to all of my customers and have most of them singed up with it.

Then during my Freshman year in high school, I wanted to make some changes. I wanted to be more serious about my company. So I changed the name to Amarimono, which came from a Japanese proverb “amarimono ni ha fuku ga aru” which means “there are fortunes in leftovers.”

Google Apps for Your Domain

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

I blogged about the Google Apps for Your Domain (GAYD) service a while ago, back when it was just Email being offered.

And well, Google has improved this service, yet again. First, I can’t remember when but some time back, they added the Calendar feature to the GAYD. Then they also recently added the ability to use Google Pages for your domain. (100MB free hosting)

If you want to see an example, www.shimadafamily.org is done FULLY (email, calendar, chat, web) with GAYD. I love it, pretty neat huh?

Why am I talking about this all the sudden? Well, they opened some more slots for the beta testers. (I think it’s something like a couple domains are auto accepted into the program for every Google Account). I’ve reached that limit, and my other domains are pending review from Google.

Some features I’d like to see Google implement in their GAYD service is:

  • A ’shared’ calendar just for the domain (right now whenever you create a user and they use the calendar they get their own calendar, which is fine, but it’s hard to share between users of the same domain)
  • Google Docs & Spreadsheets added to the list of products offered. In addition to that, an easy way to share docs between accounts on the same domain
  • More detailed user/permissions management for the domain

Other than those, I’m happy with what they offer now, and actually I’m pretty impressed with it too!

amie.st - the new way to share music

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

The music business has always been a big industry. There are lots of sites out there trying to sell music better than iTunes. MySpace was created originally for bands to have a place to upload their music for free.

But all of them are missing something. Something important. Their missing the ’social networking’ part. Music is about people. Music is meant to be shared amongst friends. (more…)

MacProbe is (semi) Finished!

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

Remember back in July when I first started talking about a Mac software review site? Well, this weekend I spent figuring out how the WordPress template system works, and got my first template finished!

Well, there is some minor stuff to work out, but overall, it’s done.

Can you believe it? I can’t.

MacProbe will bring you great reviews from now on, and there’s also going to be a ‘blogging’ aspect to it, to help us stand out from the other Review sites. Good idea huh?

iTunes 7 Review

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Apple’s new iTunes 7

“The most significant enhancement to the world’s most popular music jukebox and online music and video store since it debuted in 2001.” Has something in common with Tiger.

What might that be? I’ll get to that a little later, right now I’d like to try writing a review for it.

Some useful stuff for web surfers

Friday, September 29th, 2006

My friend Aki just posted about a new service called “Think Pocket“, and it’s looks more like Mac OS X’s dashboard that comes over your webpage if you click on the bookmarklet.

I personally didn’t like it that much. The GUI was very nice. But I didn’t feel the features were that useful.

Two things that I use instead are Google Bookmarks, and Google Notebook.

Google Bookmarks is of course a bookmarking service. If you have a Google or Gmail account you can easily access it (I think you need to have Search History enabled though, I’m not sure).

And I have it setup with one bookmarklet that opens up my bookmarks list, while another is an easy “New Bookmark” bookmarklet. You can categorize them using tags, and there’s a specific one that lets you show whatever is in that category on your Personlized Home Page for Google.

Google Notebook is very useful if you are doing research. The Firefox plugin that comes with it pops up in the bottom right corner of the window, and you can just add a link to a “notebook” (like a category), or you can even copy text and images to it to view later.

I highly recommend both.

Combat Global Warming

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

The owner of the Virgin Group pledged to donate $3 billion to combat global warming.

The world right now is too selfish. A lot of people just want money, to be rich, and get whatever they want. They don’t think about the future of mankind, let alone the world… But the few who do, like Mr. Branson are going in the right direction.

When you have the power and wealth to help stop a global problem, you should put it to use. And that’s what he’s doing. Kudos to him for doing so.

.Mac’s New Webmail

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I just took a quick peak at the preview for .Mac’s new webmail service. It look awsome! Just like the Mail application I have on my desktop.

I have two .mac accounts, one which is just mine, and another which is part of a family plan. I admit, .mac had faster service when it first came out. After that people abused their bandwidth and now the service is actually pretty slow.

Since I am paying $100/year, i wish they could increase the limits. For the same amount I could get my own hosting account and setup a similar but more messy setup!

Apple really has brought .Mac into it’s operating system very well, and sometimes it just feels essential. But I’m sure many members are upset with the poor quality of features. (I mean, Gmail has 2.7+GB of storage for free!)

Microsoft’s Soapbox on MSN? What a joke.

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

I haven’t received an invitation to Soapbox, nor do I want to. Some people, like me, have a bias against Microsoft. So whenever I hear that name, I tend not to get close to it.

Not to mention, have you seen their Intro Video??!?!??! IT SUCKS. That’s all I have to say about it.

But, even though I’m against MS. I still give them a chance. My friend said “I love google, but MS’ new Live search is pretty good”… So I gave that a chance. And the results might have been a little better, but the interface sucked, was slow and slugish. Thus, I continue to use Google.

And same with Soapbox… I’ll give it a chance when it comes out, but I think I’ll stick to YouTube or my own hosting when it comes to video in the future.

Microsoft has always been a so-so copycat. I wonder how they’ll do with this move.

Forbes top 400

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

For the first time Forbes’ top 400 of the world richest people have over $1billion each. Totalling to $1.25 trillion! Just wanted to say this interested me, now that more and more people are getting that wealthy, I want to see how they use the money.
